Looking For A Wedding Photographer. Go HERE
Interview With Jonas PetersonJonas Peterson was recently rated one of the world's top 10 wedding photographers and it's not hard to see why. He has a very unique and very contemporary style. This is what wedding photography is all about. if you're not sure what wedding photography can actually be or what you should be looking for from a photographer. Look no further.
Jonas began his career as copywriter. He was born in Sweden but now lives in Australia, which lends itself to stunning and grand locations. Looking for a change in life in 2004, he moved to Australia and began working in advertising. Photography was merely a hobby for Jonas, he bought his 1st DSLR in 2003, experimenting with the camera and learning from trail and error.
Shooting his first wedding in 2007 for a friend, this was to be the start of his next successful career. Still working in advertising, he started to book more and more weddings. In 2011 he is now taking requests for of 150 weddings and a large portion of these are worldwide.
What has been your key to success?
One of the main things is the key to understanding social media and networking. If you can work these things to your advantage, it's half the battle. I am getting around 120,000 visits to my site each month and I am on page 1 of google which. The main thing though is being able to take a good photo. None of these things matter if you can't take a decent photo.
Why did you become a wedding photographer?
I love photography and I love journalism and I had a need to show that somehow. I had been told for years to give photography a go but I didn't want to listen and carried on working in advertising. It was only when I shot a friends wedding did that change things for me.
When I started my wedding photography business, everything to me looked force, not very real. I wanted to shoot weddings and show a bit of personality. Each couple is different and I wanted the personality of the bride and groom to shine through. The weddings I saw felt staged, so I saw an opportinity there.
What advice do you have for people wishing to become wedding photographers?
It's important to find your own style and stick with that. This takes time. If you are shooting someone's wedding, you need to know what you are doing, so you need to think about that before you start shooting professionally.
What is the most challenging thing about a wedding.
It's the pace. You think you are going to get a chance at doing all the things you've thought about doing but it never happens like that, you just have to go with it.
Do you have an approach to a wedding?
No. No real approach. I will visit the church and the venue but that's about it.Every wedding is different and every bride is different. I try to capture images that suit the bride and not images that suit me or my portfolio. Getting to understand who the couple are takes time throughout the day and I let them guide me.
How many wedding photos do you take and what is your post process
I usually take around 1000 to 2000 shots and I narrow those down to about 400. I look at an image and decide whether I want it or not. That's about it in terms of culling. I use Photo Mechanic during the culling process. I think you have to trust your judgement when it comes to getting rid of images.
I use Lightroom to do some adjustments and batch process the images in photoshop using a few actions, making some local adjustments here and there. The whole process for a wedding usually takes me around a day all in all.
Any bad experiences at a wedding?
Not yet. Touch wood.
What are things apart from photography that you need for a good business.
I think it's extremely important that you have a great website and where possible a great blog. Without these I think your going to be making a big mistake.
Would you say you are still learning.
Yes. Definitely. I like to stay open to everything around me. The day I stop learning, I think is the day I'm done.
Well, that's it. Thank you Jonas for your time
As you can see. Jonas Peterson has a very different approach to wedding photography. I hope this has changed your perception of how your wedding photography should be or you approach wedding photography as a business and as an art form.
